12/13/22 - Susquehanna Township, PA - Crest Rd

At 0906 hours, Box 32-2 sent Company 32 and Engine 301 to 3204 Crest Rd for a gas leak. Reports indicated an excavator struck a gas line, with gas flowing into the residence, and they were in the process of evacuating. Engine 32 went on scene and staged at Crest and Northway Roads advising they had an odor of gas in the air. Command 32 requested Rescue 37 and Engine 91 to the scene as companies began evacuating the block. 25 minutes from dispatch, command 32 radioed that there was a massive explosion with one house completely involved in fire, possibly fire in the exposure, and requested the second alarm. Engines 33, 37, Tower 1, Truck 34, Rescues 40, 59, 91, 91-5, and Squad 20 (RIT) made up the extra alarm. Handlines and the master stream from Truck 32 poured water on the collapsed dwelling for about 45 minutes until lines were shut down. A contractor working at the home struck the gas line setting off the power explosion that rocked the neighborhood blowing out the windows of several homes, just moments after firefighters and the residents evacuated the residence. Two people suffered non-life threatening injuries.
