At 1610 hours, shortly after the “D” platoon went on duty, Box 1-3 sent Wagon 3, Squad 8, Truck 2, Tower 1, and Battalion Chief 7 (Bastinelli) to 2224 Logan Street, in the city’s Uptown section, for a structure fire. Companies enroute were advised of a fire on the third floor, unknown what is on fire, and everybody was getting out. Truck 2 arrived with a 3 story, middle of the row, dwelling with smoke showing from the 3rd floor. Chief 7 arrived, assumed Logan Street command, and requested the first alarm bringing Wagon 4, Rescue 69, and Air 13 to the scene. Wagon 3 secured a mid-block hydrant and Squad 8 laid a line to the rear from Woodbine and Logan Streets for water supply. Captain 4 from Truck 2 reported heavy fire in a closest on the 3rd floor and Wagon 3 was stretching a line in place to extinguish. Squad 8 and Tower 1 went to work in the B exposure at 2222 Logan Street. With heavy smoke issuing from the dormer/roof line in a row of 16 dwellings and interior crews reporting fire in the walls, Chief 7 requested the 2nd alarm. Engines 37-1, 30, Trucks 34, 50, and Rescue 91 were sent to the scene. Chiefs 1 and 2 also responded to the scene. 5 lines were stretched and operated in several buildings along with extensive opening up allowed companies to make progress about 30 minutes after companies arrived. 3 homes were affected and left several people homeless. The fire was placed under control at 1713 hours.
