A late New Year’s Day fire heavily damage a Progress home leaving a family of six homeless. At 2207 hours, Box 32-1 toned sending Company 32, Engines 30, 33, 40, Truck 34, and Rescue 37 to 3423 Walnut Street for a reported house fire. Caller reported a fire from the wall in the living room and everyone was to be out of the residence. Chief 32-2 went on scene reporting fire showing from a window. Chief 32 requested the first alarm at 2211 hours which added Air 30, Engine 37, and Rescue 40 to the box. Chief 32-1 assumed command. Engine 32 grabbed a hydrant on Walnut Street and took a position in front of the dwelling. Truck 32 came in off of 34th Street and nosed in to Engine 32. A line was stretched from Engine 32 to the front porch and Truck 32 split their crew for search and ventilation. Heavy fire and smoke issued from the first floor of a 2.5 story, wood frame, dwelling as companies began to make entry. Captain 32 reported that the bulk of the fire was knocked down in 5 minutes and primary searches on the first floor were negative. The fire was handled with 2 engines and 2 trucks and contained primarily to the first floor living room. All searches were negative. A family of six was left homeless and no smoke detectors were found to be in the residence. The last Progress units cleared the scene at 0007 hours.
