5/13/13 - Harrisburg City, PA - Hummel St & Hale St

At 1820 hours, Box 1-4 sent Squad 8, Wagon 4, Towers 1,3, and Chief 5 (Horst) to 431 Hummel Street for calls reporting a house fire with possible entrapment. Squad 8 went on location with heavy fire showing from the second floor of a 3 story, brick, duplex. Chief 5 requested the balance of the first alarm and special called Truck 32 (Progress) to the scene. Crews went in service with handlines and a primary search of the fire building and exposure. All occupants were able to escape safely. Firefighters made an initial attack on the fire floor knocking down the bulk of the fire in about 10 minutes. The fire did extend to the third floor and roof area but an aggressive attack and manpower summoned to the scene kept the flames from causing further damage. The fire was placed under control in about 30 minutes with units remaining on the scene an extended period for overhaul.

While units were mopping up at the Hummel Street fire, at approximately 1930 hours, Box 1-4 sent transfer mutual aid companies to 215 Hale Avenue at the Magnolia Garden Apartments for smoke in the building. County dispatch advised units they were receiving multiple calls. With that info, a first alarm was requested before arrival, bringing in city companies that were released from the Hummel Street fire. Crews were able to knock down a kitchen fire with a handline at the two-story, brick, apartment building. Companies started to pick up about 20 minutes and units released. The two fires displaced 6 adults and 14 children.
