Shippensburg area fire companies battled an apartment fire this morning that heavily damaged the structure and left several people homeless. Shortly before 0130 hours units were dispatched to 130 E. Garfield Street for a house fire with entrapment. First arriving companies had heavy fire on the 1st floor of a 2.5, brick, apartment building. A second alarm was requested. Multiple Hand lines were stretched into the building which consisted of 5 apartments. Primary search resulted in negative entrapment. The stubborn fire traveled throughout the void spaces burning for over an hour before being brought under control. A third alarm was requested bringing in companies from Adams, Cumberland, and Franklin counties to the scene and for standby. Three people were injured in the fire, including two firefighters, and left 13 people homeless. An electrical problem is believed to have sparked the blaze.
