7/14/05 - Steelton Borough - N. Front St

At 1625 hours Dauphin County Box 501 (Steelton) sounded for a reported structure fire at 407 N. Front Street. Calls advised of a working basement fire and EMS arrived with heavy smoke showing. Engine and Truck 50 arrived on scene and stretched a 1 3/4" line to the rear. (Although the address is N. Front Street it is common for access to the building to be off of N. 2nd Street. This is essentially made side 3 the command post area.) The fire building was a large, religious facility that had varied heights and multiple interconnected structures creating a maze-like condition. Companies were met with an active fire in the basement burning around the oil burner. A second 1 3/4" inch line was stretched from Engine 41 (Bressler) knocking down the visible fire although a heavy smoke condition was still present on the interior. At this time all occupants of the building had been accounted for. At 1645 hours Chief 50 (Vance) ordered a second alarm, bringing many companies who worked the Middletown job the previous day. Companies will remain on the scene for an extended period overhauling, clearing smoke, and investigation. 1 firefighter was transported for heat related conditions.
