6/1/05 - Harrisburg - S. 2nd Street
At 2006 hours Dauphin County Communications dispatched Task Force 1 units to 23 S. 2nd Street, the Crowne Plaza Hotel, for a reported structure fire. Units responding on the first alarm were Squad 8, Wagon 4, Towers 1 and 3 under the command of Chief 7 (Kumpf). Enroute, companies were notified of multiple calls received with the fire being reported on the roof. Tower 3, responding from quarters just blocks away, arrived on location and Lt. 6 (Snyder) reported fire showing from the Chestnut Street side. He advised Tower 3 would be going in service. Wagon 4 arrived on the S. 2nd Street side and laid a 5" supply line. Tower 1 and Squad 8 arrived on the Chestnut Street side next to Tower 3. Squad 8 hit a hydrant and laid a supply line to Tower 3. The Crowne Plaza is a 10 story hotel and the fire was on the roof, that covered the dining area, approximately four stories high. Tower 3 quickly went in service and crews stretched a handline from the bucket quickly knocking down the main body of fire. With no exposure problem, crews performed extensive overhaul by cutting and peeling back the metal roof, pulling ceilings, and ventilating the main hotel. Control was marked at 2030 hours in which time a second alarm of Wagon 3 and Tower 2 was requested for manpower. The fire was handled by the D platoon and brought out Chief 1 (Konkle) and Chief 3 (Soulier).
