Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - Swatara Township - Highland Street
At 2353 hours Box 49-1 sent companies to Highland Street between Second and Eisenhower for a barn fire. As Chief 49 went enroute County informed that EMS was reporting a working fire. Tankers 54 (Londonderry) and 59 (Lower Swatara) were added to the box upon this information. First arriving companies were met with a well-involved barn and immediately went into defensive operations. Supply lines were established from the opposites sides of the structure as this stretch of Highland Street does not have hydrants. Aerial streams from Truck 456 (Chambers Hill) and 50 (Steelton) were deployed on the fire from the eastern side of the barn. Engines 30 (Penbrook) and 59 (Lower Swatara) were also special called to assist with manpower and water supply. With no imminent exposures involved companies were able to focus on surround and drown operations. The fire was placed under control in about an hour with crews remaining on the scene for extensive overhaul.
