A 2 alarm fire left 9 people homeless early this morning in Middletown Borough. Around 0530 hours Box 88-1 dispatched for a reported porch fire at 18 E. High Street. The box was quickly upgraded to a working fire upon the arrival of a Company 88 duty officer. First arriving companies had heavy fire showing to the rear of a 2.5 story, wood frame, duplex apartment building. Crews made a good hit on the bulk of fire but void spaces allowed fire to travel up to the common loft. As heavy fire vented from the roof, Chief 88 (Scheetz) requested a second alarm. Fire companies from across lower Dauphin County and Station 7-4 from Lancaster County responded to the scene. The fire was placed under control in 45 minutes and heavily damaged the building. One occupant was transported by EMS Co. 7 to a local medical center with second degree burns sustained while trying to fight the flames.
