The hot and steamy summer afternoon was disrupted at 1350 hours when Dauphin County Box 58-1 transmitted for a structure fire. The address of the fire was at 209 Ann St and initial calls reported a working fire. Chief 58 (Whitebread) arrived and requested a second alarm as he had heavy fire from the rear of a 3-story frame, occupied, twin dwelling. The B exposure, which was a 3 story, brick, occupied dwelling, separated only a few feet from the fire building, soon became heavily involved. Numerous hand lines as well as master streams from Truck 57 and the deck gun from Engine 56 poured water on the blaze as mutual aid companies arrived. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze in 90+ degree temperatures eventually knocking down the bulk of the fire in about 45 minutes. Crews continued to hit hot spots requesting additional manpower from numerous companies, as extensive overhaul would be required. The fire brought mostly all trucks in Southern Dauphin County to the scene prompting Columbia Truck 8-1 to relocate at Middletown station, which is about a 20-mile trip.
