Friday, April 3, 2009 - 500 blk Division Street - 2 Alarms
Box 1-3 toned out at 2210 hours for a reported church fire at 5th and Division Streets in the Uptown district. Wagon 3, Squad 8, Towers 1,2, and Chief 5 (Berger) were on the street quickly and informed of numerous calls reporting a kitchen fire. Captain 4 (Clark) radioed that companies would be going to work with heavy smoke on the block. Wagon 3 hit a hydrant at Reel and Division that would be supplied by the Squad and Towers 1 and 2 took positions in side A. Chief 5 reported heavy fire through the roof in the rear with heavy smoke pushing from the vents and requested the full first alarm. As companies were attempting an aggressive interior attack on side D the fire flashed on the second floor front at which time crews were evacuated from the structure. Aerial streams from the platforms of Towers 2 and 3 managed to darken down the bulk of fire. Members briefly re-entered the building but due to a partial collapse of the roof exterior operations were resumed. A second alarm brought additional manpower from Dauphin and Cumberland Counties to assist city firefighters. The fire was declared under control in about an hour with extensive overhaul. Wagon 3 returned to the scene for about 2 hours to ensure no hot spots would flare up. The church which was occupied at the time received heavy fire, smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported.
