City companies continue to stay busy as they battled an afternoon fire in the city’s Hill district. At 1305 hours Box 1-4 sent box alarm companies to 431 Hummel Street for a reported structure fire. Chief 5 advised he had smoke in the area followed by heavy fire from the rear. The fire building was an occupied, 3 story, brick, duplex with fire on both floors in the rear. A severe exposure problem resulted in the first alarm being struck by Chief 5. Wagon 3 laid a line from S. 13th and Berryhill Streets and stretched a ground monitor to the rear. Tower 1 set up on side A, and Squad members made the interior attack. The fire was quickly darkened and crews performed extensive overhaul chasing hot spots. A second alarm was also requested during this period. Command was terminated with all units returning at 1500 hours. Red Cross assisted with the displacement of the occupants.
