Friday, January 11, 2008 - 431 S. 15th Street - 2 Alarms
Firefighters were aroused from sleep at 0430 hours as tones dropped for Box 1-4 with the address of 1500 Hunter Street for a structure fire. Squad 8, Wagon 4, Towers 1, 3, and Chief 6 (Kumpf) turned out on the initial alarm. Squad 8 arrived with a working fire in a 2 story, end of the row, brick, dwelling already extending to the exposures. As companies were stretching, Chief 6 requested the balance of the 1st alarm bringing Wagon 3, Tower 2, Rescue 69 (RIT),and Chiefs 1, 2, and 3 to the scene. Numerous lines were stretched into the fire building and exposures to control the fire which was very smoky, banking down to street level. Chief 6 requested a 2nd alarm bringing county mutual aid to the scene and for station coverage. Companies remained on the scene for an extended period of time performing extensive overhaul and vacated the fire building due to structural concerns. The fire building was located at 431 S.15th Street at the intersection with Hunter Street and claimed the life on one person. Numerous others were left homeless in the fire.
