May 16-18, 2008 - Harrisburg City - Fire
Expo 2008 was held at the State Farm Show complex featuring
the latest in Fire, Rescue, and EMS vehicles and products.
Photos are from some of the apparatus on display at the show.

May 3, 2008 - Lower Allen Township - At
0020 hours Cumberland County Fire Headquarters dispatched Box
12-8 for an apartment fire in the area of 5337 Oxford Circle.
Responding units were advised of several calls and a working
fire. Heavy fire was showing on arrival from a 2 story, middle
of the row, town home. Despite an aggressive initial attack
the fire reached the common loft and extended to the
exposures. A second alarm was struck as companies went to
ground streams and the bucket of Truck 12 to keep the fire
from progressing. Companies remained on the scene for several
hours at the fire which affected several apartments.

April 20, 2008 - Wrightsville Borough - Company
41 (Wrightsville), 21 (Hellam), and Truck 8-1 (Columbia) sent
to 108 Hellam Street "Hometown Hotel" for a
structure fire with entrapment. Chief officer from Co. 41 on
location with heavy fire on the second floor extending to the
third floor. Fire building was a 3 story, mixed occupancy
(apartments over a bar) with exposures on the B and D side.
The fire went 2nd alarm immediately bringing in companies from
both York and Lancaster Counties to the scene. Companies
performed searches and fire suppression for almost a half hour
before evacuation the structure and going to master streams.
The fire was placed under control two hours after dispatch and
went 4 alarms. One occupant and a firefighter were transported
for injuries and approximately 20 people were left homeless.
The fire is believed to be a case of arson, set by a resident.

April 17, 2008 - Harrisburg City - Shortly
after 0600 hours, Box 1-4 toned out for a structure fire in
the 2300 block of Luce Street. Reports indicated smoke in the
house and an occupant possibly still inside. Squad 8 arrived
to smoke showing from a one-story, brick, dwelling and hit the
hydrant across the street. A line was quickly stretched
knocking down the bulk of the fire with no extension. An
occupant was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
Squad 8, Wagon 4, Towers 1, 3, and Chief 5 (Berger) handled
the box.

April 15, 2008 - Dauphin Borough - The
Dauphin Middle-Paxton Fire Company No. 1 has placed in service
a 2007 KME Predator 1250/750 pumper designated as Engine 38.
The unit replaces a 1991 E-One Protector 1250/750 pumper.

April 9, 2008 - Harrisburg City - Squad
8 B platoon started their daylight tour expecting a fairly
routine day. A few fire alarms, an accident or two, and maybe
a structure fire call thrown in the mix. And the day was
panning out to be that way when around noon a shooting behind
the quarters of Station 8 broke the "routine". As
firefighters investigated, they had a gunshot victim on 13th
Street and a fleeing suspect on Vernon Street. Lieutenant 8
(Bair) and crew kept an eye on the suspect relaying his
location to County. He was taken into custody about 5 minutes
later a few blocks from the scene while Chief 4 (Hartman)
attended to the gunshot victim. Around 1230 hours, with the adrenaline
still pumping from the shooting call, County toned out Box 1-4
for a house fire at 1329 Berryhill Street. Calls were being
received for flames from the rear of the structure. Squad 8
arrived on location with smoke showing from a row of 3 story,
brick dwellings. Chief 4 (Hartman) reported a 1st floor
kitchen going good. Several hand lines were stretched into the
fire building and exposures while truck companies opened up.
Firefighters were able to get a knock on the fire in about 10
minutes and performed extensive overhaul. The fire went 1st
alarm+ bringing to the scene Squad 8, Wagon 3, 4, Engine 2
(reserve), Engine 6 (reserve), Towers 1,2,3, and Chiefs 1
(Konkle) and 2 (Soulier). Great job by the members of Squad 8
and the rest of the B platoon for their efforts today.

April 3, 2008 - Londonderry Township - Dauphin
Box 54-2 toned about 0145 hours for a reported structure fire
on Woodcrest Drive. Additional calls upgraded the box to a
full first alarm assignment and Chief 54 arrived with a
working fire. A 2 story, occupied, bi-level home with attached
garage was heavily involved with fire thru the roof. Companies
led off with the deck gun from Engine 54 and a 1.75"
attack line. The fire was placed under control in about an
hour and caused significant damage to the home. Companies on
scene: 46 (Hummelstown), 47 (South Hanover), 48 (Hershey), 54
(Londonderry), 59 (Lower Swatara), 88 (Middletown), and
Lebanon County 3 (Lawn).

March 31, 2008 - Rye Township - Companies
from Perry, Cumberland, and Dauphin Counties battled a
building fire at the intersection of Flowers Lane and Route
850 just outside Marysville Borough around 1045 hours. First
arriving units had heavy fire in a one story, garage-type,
concrete building with several automobiles inside. A second
alarm was quickly struck and more tankers requested as fire
was extending into similar type exposures and venting from the
roof. Once a decent water supply was established hand lines and
aerial streams from Truck 2 (Duncannon), 17 (Enola), and 30
(Hampden) darkened the fire down but due to the integrity of
the structure exterior ops continued. The fire was placed
under control about an in hour into the incident.

March 30, 2008 - Reading City - Around
1540 hours Engine 9, Ladder 3, Rescue 1, and Car 9 (Mogel)
dispatched to 13th and Marion Streets fore a vehicle accident
with injuries and possible entrapment. Engine 9 arrived to a
four vehicle accident with one occupant having a serious head
injury and no entrapment. Companies laid down absorbent and
assisted EMS before going available in about 20 minutes.

March 30, 2008 - Reading City - 5
new pumpers and a heavy rescue have recently been delivered to
the Reading Fire & Rescue Services. The engines, delivered
between January and February, are 2008 KME Predator 1500/500
pumpers and feature the latest NFPA standards. They have been
assigned to Engines 1 and 13 (8th and Court), Engine 3 (3rd
and Court), Engine 9 (9th and Marion), and Engine 11 (McKnight
and Spring). The rescue a 2007 KME Predator, delivered in
October, has been assigned to Rescue 1 (Plum and
Franklin).

March 24, 2008 - Steelton Borough - Company
50 (Steelton) and Engine 55(Highspire) sent to S. Front and
Chestnut Streets for an accident with injuries and vehicle
into a structure. Crews had a truck that hit a light pole and
struck a building. The driver was taken to an area hospital
and units cleared the scene in about a half hour.

March 22, 2008 - Middletown Borough - Tones
dropped around 0900 hours for a structure fire in the 200 block of
Mattis Avenue. Incoming units were advised of a working fire and PD had
removed one occupant. Engine 88 (Middletown) arrived on location with a
well involved, 2.5 story, frame duplex. A second alarm was requested by
Command 88 as fire was rapidly spreading throughout the involved duplex
and threatening a similar type exposure to the west. Companies briefly
went defensive to knock down the bulk of fire before declaring
control.

March 3, 2008 - Fairview Township - York
and Cumberland County companies dispatched to the area of Old York Road
and Ross Avenue for a structure fire. Units responding to the 0315 hours
alarm arrived to a fully involved one-story, building that was in preparation
to open as "Da Capo" pizza restaurant. Crews went in
service with ground appliances and aerial streams as heavy fire consumed
the entire structure. A second alarm was struck bringing in more
companies primarily from Cumberland County as the fire occurred just
over the New Cumberland Borough line. The fire was knocked down after
about 30 minutes and companies remained on the scene with extensive
overhaul. Ironically, the fire occurred at almost the exact location as
a February 1, 2007 fire that destroyed the Hidden View restaurant.

February 24, 2008 - Lower Paxton Township - Companies
from 32 (Progress), 33 (Colonial Park), 34 (Paxtonia), 35 (Linglestown),
and 40 (Paxtang), and 44 (Lawnton) responded to 4900 block of Eastman
Drive for a reported building fire with possible entrapment. Chief 33
(Shields) on location with heavy fire showing from a 2 story, end of the
row, town home. Companies went in service with an aggressive attack on
the fire and for possible trapped occupants. Companies were forced to
evacuate the structure as heavy fire consumed the fire building and
extended to the exposures via the common loft. Exterior streams knocked
down the bulk of the fire and companies remained on the scene for
extended overhaul.

February 23, 2008 - Lemoyne Borough - While
units were operating at a garage fire in Company 35's (South Middleton)
first due area, tones dropped for West Shore companies to 417 Hummel
Avenue for a house fire. PD arrived on scene reporting smoke showing.
The fire was located in the basement of a 3 story, brick and wood frame,
occupied duplex. Despite efforts of first due members, the fire was traveling
the walls and was spreading vertically between the duplex. A
second alarm was struck as heavy smoke blanketed the area and crews were
evacuated from the structure. Heavy fire was reported in the kitchen and
the second floor of the adjoining exposure. Firefighters made a great
strop in keeping the fire from exposing to an occupied, 2 story, brick
dwelling just feet from the fire building. A third alarm was struck
bringing companies from Cumberland, Dauphin, and York Counties.
Companies went in service with hand lines and master stream as heavy
fire consumed the third floor and roof. The fire burned for several
hours before being brought under control.

February 13, 2008 - Susquehanna Township - Around
0600 hours as freezing rain was blanketing Central Pennsylvania, Dauphin
County toned out a structure fire at 4740 Tuscarora Street. Engine 37-1
(Rescue) arrived with a working fire in a 2.5 story, wood frame duplex. The fire was located on a tight street with limited access
just north of Front Street. Companies made an aggressive attack on the
fire but were forced to retreat due to deteriorating conditions. Heavy
fire consumed both dwellings as crews went defensive and Command 37
requested 2 additional engines. Companies knocked the bulk of the fire
and performed extensive overhaul. Companies on location: Engines 37-1,
37 (Rescue), 32, 32-1 (Progress), 38 (Dauphin), 31 (Edgemont), 20
(Summerdale), Truck 32 (Progress), Rescue 35 (Linglestown), 37 (Rescue),
Air 30 (Penbrook), Tankers 35 (Linglestown), 20 (Summerdale), 19 (West
Enola).

February 12, 2008 - Mechanicsburg Borough - Companies
27 (Citizens) and 28 (Washington) along with Engine 3-37 (US Navy)
dispatched to 619 Robert Street for a house fire. Units arrived to the
0100 hours alarm with a working fire in an occupied, 1.5 story,
dwelling. Fire was reported to be in the basement with some extension. A
second alarm was struck as companies operated in freezing temps with
light snowfall. The fire was placed under control shortly before 0200
hours.

February 10, 2008 - Harrisburg City - Squad
8 arrived on Box 1-5, with the address of 1320 S. 13th Street, to heavy
fire showing from an occupied, 2.5 story, semi-attached dwelling shortly
after 0600 hours. A full first alarm was requested shortly followed by a
second alarm. High winds fanned the fire which extended to the exposure
as companies used several handlines to bring the blaze under control.

January 13, 2008 -
Wormleysburg Borough - Companies from the West Shore dispatched
to 10 Poplar Street for a house fire around 1530 hours. Responding units
were advised of multiple calls and Chief 1A went on location with fire
showing from side C. The fire building was an occupied, 3 story, middle
of the row, frame dwelling with heavy smoke showing from the eaves from
all the structures. A second alarm was quickly struck as it was apparent
the fire would be labor intensive. Companies stretched several lines,
including the use of foam, and threw several ground ladders to control
the rapidly spreading fire. Once crews were able to reach the roof
firefighters were able to make good progress on the fire. Companies
needed over an hour to control the fire which went multiple alarms
bringing in equipment from Dauphin and York Counties, including the City
of Harrisburg. Numerous residents were left homeless in the fire.

January 11, 2008 - Harrisburg
City - Firefighters were aroused from sleep at 0430 hours as
tones dropped for Box 1-4 with the address of 1500 Hunter Street for a
structure fire. Squad 8, Wagon 4, Towers 1, 3, and Chief 6 (Kumpf)
turned out on the initial alarm. Squad 8 arrived with a working fire in
a 2 story, end of the row, brick, dwelling already extending to the
exposures. As companies were stretching, Chief 6 requested the balance
of the 1st alarm bringing Wagon 3, Tower 2, Rescue 69 (RIT),and Chiefs
1, 2, and 3 to the scene. Numerous lines were stretched into the fire
building and exposures to control the fire which was very smoky, banking
down to street level. Chief 6 requested a 2nd alarm bringing county
mutual aid to the scene and for station coverage. Companies remained on
the scene for an extended period of time performing extensive overhaul
and vacated the fire building due to structural concerns. The fire
building was located at 431 S.15th Street at the intersection with
Hunter Street and claimed the life on one person. Numerous others were
left homeless in the fire.

January 4, 2008 - West
Pennsboro Township - Around 1900 hours, Cumberland
County dispatched Box 46-01 for a bedroom fire at 530 Greason Road. Engine
2-41 (Carlisle-Union) arrived with heavy fire showing from a one-story,
ranch style, dwelling. Companies stretched several lines and opened the
roof in efforts to control the fire. The fire was knocked down in about
15 minutes.

January 1, 2008 - Steelton
Borough - In the afternoon hours Box 501 toned for smoke from
the structure in the area of 426 N. Front Street. Engine 50 (Steelton)
arrived with smoke inside a one, story, brick, commercial building.
Companies stretched a line as a precaution but never utilized it. Units
remained on the scene investigating the smoke source that was traced to
a heating unit. All companies cleared the scene in about a half hour.
